Week 8 Update
Hello Everyone!
This week has been huge for our whole team as we prepare for AZ North in Flagstaff! There are so many facets of preparation, so let’s get into it!
I’m Delia, the media director. The media team has been hard at work this week, making a robot reveal video and some awesome reels with Geeks Night Out and Phoenix Pride! It has been extremely fun working with such great people on cool projects. Jaxson Barbian especially has been a huge help in making sure that everything gets captured. Check out our instagram for everything we have been doing, especially this next week during competition!
The impact video was also completed this week, which leads to another big portion of what our team has been working on: the Impact Award! As an Impact presenter, I have been working with other members of the team to create a great presentation that we will present to judges at competitions. This has been a huge undertaking, and the whole team is a part of Impact! We have also had impact testing this past week, which is how we prepare our team to be ready to talk about all the things we do on a FIRST, local, and global scale to make sure that STEM is for EVERYONE. We ask the questions that they might encounter, and help them learn how to explain how they have made an impact through the outreach and events they have participated in. These questions can come from anyone who might be interested in competitions, including judges, so it is pivotal that everyone can talk about it!
Hello! I’m Aiden, The Safety Lead. As Safety Lead I ensure that members and mentors are being safe and teaching them how to be safe. Things like learning to clean up a battery spill, how to properly use the band saw, and where the first aid cabinets are.
A big part of this past week and a half has been testing for our competitions. This includes “The Pit Test” which our members take in order to see if they are eligible to be a position on the pit (Mechanical, programmer, etc.). A portion required for everyone to take no matter the position they apply for is the safety part. This is designed to test a members’ knowledge on general safety and what to do in certain situations when things go wrong. There are questions like: How do you clean up a battery spill?, What should you do when someone shouts “Enabling”?, and What should you do if you or someone else gets hurt?.
As a part of the mechanical team, this week I’ve been working on packing for AZ North. This requires going through our packing list and making sure everything is packed to go with us on the trip. We recently got a new workbench to pack all of our tools in, so I have been working on fitting all of the tools and spare parts in to make sure they are all in the right place.
That's all for us this week! We’ll see you after our competition!
